Kalyna graduated from York University in Toronto in 2004 with a BFA Honours in Set and Lighting Design. Since then she has designed shows in Toronto, Grande Prairie, Banff and Calgary ranging in scope from intimate cabaret-style muscial acts to theatre, opera, dance, dance festivals, concert, corporate, and event lighting. She also has experience with on-the-fly lighting design and operation for music and dance.
In 2009 she had the privilege of assisting Mr. Harry Frehner on a full-scale opera (Cunning Little Vixen) and ballet (Festival Ballet) at the Banff Centre's summer arts festival, assisting him with paperwork, drafting and focus. 2010 gave her the opportunity to assist Mr. Scott Reid on two shows for Vertigo Mystery Theatre (Evelyn Strange and Rebecca) more in a concept and focus/cueing capacity. She then assisted Mr. Frehner again in 2012 on Calgary Opera's production of Otello.
In February 2010 Kalyna designed lighting for Anchor|Red theatre’s inaugural show, aWay and was invited back to design their follow-up show The After in February 2011 and it's re-imagining in 2012. She has also designed three shows with the Calgary Opera Emerging Artists' Program, The Enchanted Child (2008), Cosi Fan Tutte (2011), Ariodante (2012), The Rape of Lucretia (2014), and The Portrait Of Manon/The First Nowell (2014). She also had the privilege of working on a brand new community chamber opera entitled What Brought Us Here (2012).
As of 2013 Kalyna has been the lighting designer for the Calgary International Flamenco Festival as well as the resident and touring designer for La Caravan Dance.
